Union Hill: Nationally Registered, Locally Loved!

Many visitors to this area pass through unaware they have entered the nationally registered historic neighborhood of Union Hill.  One tell-tale sign that you’re in Union Hill is the uniquely designed streets. Rather than following the traditional gridlike the adjacent Church Hill and Shockoe Valley, this East-End neighborhood’s roads compliment the hilly terrain on which it sits, as originally designed by John Adams and Ben Mosby.

The architecture of Union Hill boasts a variety of antebellum styles and with the neighborhood being largely developed pre-WWI, there are only a few newer examples of modern structures.

Union Hill remains quite the hidden gem, only recently receiving outside traffic for destination places such as Sub Rosa, The Roosevelt and Metzger Bar and Butchery.  Union Market, a neighborhood staple since 2014 serves as a local grocery, sandwich shop, and bar for area residents.

This neighborhood, in the early stages of up-and-coming, is typically more affordability than the trending Church Hill area with all of the same amenities. With many churches and local organizations like Tricycle Gardens calling it home, Union Hill is a neighborhood that enjoys a rich history and sense of community.
