Small Farming is Getting Big!

Along with the Spring comes the blossoming farmer’s markets in the Greater Richmond Area.  We are lucky enough to live in a region where we can find fresh and locally sourced food all year round.  As is the trend throughout the United States, consumers are leaning more and more towards organic, seasonal, and local products which has encouraged the growth and interest in sustainable small farming.  Hanover County alone is a prime example of the growing number of small farms. We have over 20 Farmer’s Markets throughout the Richmond area that proves this trend such as South of the James market, 17th Street Farmer’s Market and the Powhatan Farmer’s Market on Old Buckingham Road, which are some of the biggest.
There are a variety of ways for someone to achieve the dream of small farming.  Urban farming is great for vegetables but can be a little cramped, especially if you have lots of household members!  But say you'd rather raise animals and don't necessarily have to move out to the sticks!  You still need your grocery store, dining and entertainment, not to mention still wanting to be a part of society.  What about the best of both worlds? You can attain the dream of having a self-sustaining farm, whether that means growing fresh organic produce, raising goats or alpacas, or even running your own business stabling horses with an old fashioned Bed and Breakfast.  It's not far fetched, it just takes a little creativity from you and your Realtor!
The first step to being successful is to figure out what you want to produce and match the land to its suited purpose. What do you want to produce, either for yourself or to sell?  There are really tons of options!  Fresh flowers, seasonal vegetables, a finished product like jams, or sauces is plenty to keep you occupied!  Or, do you want to raise animals to make cheese from goats milk, or yarn from alpacas?  While you might have high ambitions start with something that you absolutely love and spend time mastering that.  Farming is hard work, and unless you’re passionate about what you’re growing or raising, it'll be hard to get through those bad days.
It is not especially often that a Realtor comes by a property like this.  It's not often you find buyers looking for this kind of life because it takes someone special.  But when you do, it is so exciting to think of the land's potential that would suit that special buyer perfectly!
If you think growing your own fresh, local produce, or raising small herd animals is only a thing of dreams, think again.  We can find you the best property to suit your desires.
Find your dream in Powhatan on this gorgeous 33-acre property.  With a little over 12 acres cleared, it would be perfect for any type of small farming you wish to pursue.  The property is already outfitted with a 12 stable Morton barn to board horses or other farm animals and the home is newly renovated and gorgeous enough to run a luxurious Bed and Breakfast.  This property has so much potential and I can't wait to find someone who is as excited about it as me!
